I loved this, Steve. It made me think of something Emerson says about how when we travel we all too often forget that we bring along the same old selves. This is a sly story, critical of a certain class of people, critical of the cultural forces that shape or valuing, without being militant or overheated about it--a kind of soft-spoken polemic. And you have a great eye for characterizing detail, as with this: "drinking sun-brewed iced tea, a single mint leaf from their herb garden floating in each cup."

Naomi: You created a character that absolutely fascinated me. But what I really like is how you gave her complexity--this, for instance: "The boyfriend didn’t deserve this – he was a good man. She hated him for being decent." The heart in conflict with itself. The desperate need for attention from an authority, even one whose name she cannot remember. The idea of hating someone for being decent--so against the grain, yet so understandable, so right, given the character you created.

OK this is NOT a chick piece. I hate chick pieces and this kept me going to the end. Like Lee, I guessed "quiet desperation."

Course maybe that's just me. . .wait. . .that is a chick piece comment for a very well crafted, engaging story.

OK I gotta go watch a rugby game and have a beer now.
